Diabetes Care

Diabetes Education and Management

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which a patient's pancreas stops producing insulin, a critical hormone that allows our body to process food into energy. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) estimates that more than 18 million people suffer from diabetes. There are several different types of the disease and each individual patient has unique needs as they manage their diabetes and establish a healthy lifestyle.

We offer numerous diabetes care programs throughout New Jersey, giving our patients convenient access to the care, education, and resources they need to manage their disease. From simple blood sugar monitoring to medical device training and meal planning, our New Jersey diabetes care facilities are ready to help minimize this disease's impact on our community.

Understanding Diabetes

Diabetes hinders a patient's body from regulating blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes is often first diagnosed in children and young people and is caused when critical insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed. We currently have no way to prevent this form of diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a much more common form of the disease and occurs when the patient's pancreas becomes less efficient at producing insulin or moving glucose to cells (a condition called insulin resistance). While type 2 diabetes is often inherited, we now know that factors like poor eating and lack of exercise can foster its development.

There is a third type of diabetes, gestational diabetes, is rare and only occurs during pregnancy. In some cases, gestational diabetes can lead to type 2 diabetes for the mother.
