Pediatric Urology
World-Class Genitourinary Care for Children
RWJBarnabas Health facilities were named among the nation’s Best Children’s Hospitals for 2024 – 2025 by U.S. News & World Report. A health system-wide ranking of #35 (tie) nationally for urology is inclusive of The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital; Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center; Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center; and Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center. These rankings demonstrate to parents and caregivers of children with rare or life-threatening illnesses that they can depend on RWJBarnabas Health to provide top-quality pediatric care.

Multidisciplinary, State-of-the-Art Evaluation and Treatment
Some children with complex urinary problems may require the expertise of a variety of pediatric specialists in fields other than urology.
In partnership with Rutgers Health, RWJBarnabas Health offers access to the latest technology and a wealth of expertise in every pediatric field including radiology, anesthesiology, endocrinology, oncology, orthopedics, and neurology. Whenever necessary, specialists from across the spectrum of care will work together to meet the needs of our young urology patients.
For example, we can diagnose and treat urologic disorders in utero. In conjunction with our perinatal specialists, our team employs state-of-the-art early diagnosis and treatment methods to prevent future medical issues for children and their families.
Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery
Our pediatric urologists always use the most advanced and least invasive treatment techniques possible to achieve a positive outcome for each patient.
RWJBarnabas Health has achieved the first-ever Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Pediatric and Adolescent Robotic Surgery in the United States. This designation recognizes our commitment to a high standard of delivery of quality patient care and safety, and means that we meet nationally and internationally recognized standards.
Pediatric robotic and laparoscopic surgeries are minimally invasive. They involve using a video camera and very thin instruments. Using these small incisions we are able to perform complex surgery. Small incisions also mean less post-operative discomfort, and faster recovery so your child will get back to normal activity faster. For older children, we offer single-port robotics. There are only a handful of centers that offer this robotic procedure.
This approach is offered for:
- Ureteropelvic junction obstruction
- Undescended testis
- Kidney tumors
- Varicocele
