Lung Cancer Patient Support
The journey through lung and chest cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery can be challenging, and providing cancer patient support is critical to health outcomes. Each lung cancer specialist at RWJBarnabas Health ensures that every patient has access to the resources they need to help their body heal and programs to provide emotional support for patients and their families.
A few cancer patient support services we offer include:
- Smoking cessation. Because smoking plays such a pivotal role in some lung cancers, we offer access to a wide range of smoking cessation programs led by understanding professionals who can make your quitting dreams a reality.
- Patient navigators. These social workers and support staff personnel work with patients, their families and their oncologists as a liaison. They offer different resources, respond to questions, manage insurance issues and coordinate appointments—pretty much anything the patient needs to make their treatment more seamless, convenient or comfortable.
- Cancer rehabilitation program. Cancer patients receive specialized outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation services tailored to meet their individualized needs. This covers any health issues resulting from the cancer or treatment including pain control; bladder and bowel management; weakness and fatigue; occupational and speech therapies; and cognitive health.
- Palliative care and pain program. From medical and emotional care to spiritual care, this program operates in both inpatient and outpatient settings. It places a major emphasis on symptom management including relief from pain, anxiety, depression, or any other distresses. We want to make sure that your symptoms are managed as well as possible, providing optimal comfort and function. To achieve this, program staff work as a team with other health care professionals to provide pain relief through traditional and non-traditional approaches.
- Cancer Support Community. This service is part of an international non-profit organization dedicated to providing support, education and hope to people affected by cancer. It offers professionally led programs for emotional support, relaxation, exercise, and education. It is open to anyone impacted by cancer — from caregivers and friends to patients and family members, and is offered free.
