What Are Neurological Complications from Cancer?
Cancer can affect both your central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system (the network of nerves throughout your body). These complications may arise from:
- The cancer itself
- Treatments like chemotherapy and radiation
- The body's response to cancer
Many neurological complications are manageable with proper care, and new treatments are continuously being developed through clinical research. Early recognition and treatment of complications can significantly improve outcomes. Understanding them is the first step toward managing them effectively.
Common Neurological Complications from Cancer
Cancer can affect your nervous system in several ways:
- Brain metastases. Brain metastases are the most common neurological complication of cancer, affecting 20 to 40 percent of cancer patients. These occur when cancer spreads from other parts of the body to the brain, requiring specialized treatment approaches.
- Treatment-related effects. Radiation therapy can sometimes affect healthy brain or spine tissue, while chemotherapy may cause peripheral neuropathy – damage to nerves that can result in numbness, tingling, or pain in your hands and feet.
- Direct cancer effects. Some cancers can directly impact your nervous system, causing symptoms like headaches and seizures, changes in thinking or memory, balance and coordination problems, vision or hearing changes, and muscle weakness or numbness.
- Additional complications. Cancer and its treatments can lead to other neurological issues, including stroke or bleeding in the brain, nerve and muscle damage, infections due to a weakened immune system, spinal cord compression and cognitive changes (sometimes called "chemo brain").
Diagnosis and Treatment of Neurological Complications
Our specialists begin with thorough neurological examinations and use advanced imaging like MRI, CT, and PET scans to get a clear picture of your nervous system. We also perform specialized tests to check how your nerves and muscles are working, monitoring these closely throughout your cancer treatment.
Our pain management specialists work closely with you to keep you comfortable, while our support team helps you maintain the best possible quality of life during treatment. In severe cases, minimally invasive surgery or traditional surgery may be used to relieve neurological symptoms.
