Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine
Helping Children Breathe Freely and Thrive

At RWJBarnabas Health, our pediatric pulmonology services are dedicated to providing exceptional care for children with respiratory conditions, ensuring they can breathe freely and live life to the fullest. With a team of experienced specialists and state-of-the-art facilities, we offer comprehensive services tailored to meet each child's and their family's unique needs.
RWJBarnabas Health's pediatric pulmonologists employ their extensive experience and access to the latest in diagnostic equipment and technology to treat children with all sorts of lung conditions, from asthma to cystic fibrosis to recurrent pulmonary infections. Our facilities are equipped to evaluate and treat infants, children and adolescents for both chronic and acute respiratory conditions.
We also offer sophisticated sleep studies. Poor sleep is often a consequence of interrupted breathing, and a lack of quality sleep can affect a child’s growth and development.
Our Pediatric Pulmonology Specialists
Our team of board-certified pediatric pulmonologists diagnose and treat a wide range of pediatric respiratory conditions. Working alongside dedicated nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals, our specialists provide compassionate care and support to help children achieve optimal lung health.
Our multidisciplinary teams consist of:
- Specialty-trained physicians
- Certified advanced practice nurses
- Nurses
- Respiratory therapists
- Social workers
- Dietitians
We bring in physicians from other pediatric subspecialties to the team as needed. Pulmonary medicine teams at RWJBarnabas Health work with one of the state’s few pediatric pulmonary function labs to test and monitor children’s lung function. We focus on meeting stringent standards and delivering outstanding outcomes, and providing the best possible treatment for every child we serve.
State-of-the-Art Technology
We use the latest medical technology and advanced diagnostic tools to accurately assess and treat respiratory conditions in children. From state-of-the-art pulmonary function testing, including exercise challenge tests to pediatric flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy, our facilities enable us to provide precise diagnoses and personalized treatment plans for each patient.
Comprehensive Services: Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis and Other Respiratory Conditions
RWJBarnabas Health pulmonologists diagnose and treat all forms of pediatric respiratory infections as well as recurrent and persistent pneumonias, and help children and families manage chronic respiratory diseases. Our pediatric pulmonology and sleep programs offer a comprehensive range of services to address various respiratory conditions, including:
-
Asthma. The Pediatric Asthma Program offers comprehensive care and assessment
for children with asthma. This care includes routine lung function testing
at every clinic visit for those children that qualify. Patients with severe
asthma can also be seen in our one of a kind multi-disciplinary asthma
center where they can be evaluated simultaneously by a pediatric pulmonologist
and pediatric allergist. Our asthma services include:
- Treatment plan evaluation
- Special breathing tests
- Allergy testing
- Innovative care
-
Cystic fibrosis. The Comprehensive Cystic Fibrosis Center is one of only 3 level III CF
centers in New Jersey that is accredited by the national Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation. Our cystic fibrosis services include:
- Consultation with patients who have a positive newborn screen
- Comprehensive ambulatory and inpatient care
- Evaluation and testing
- Counseling, case management and advocacy
- Lifelong follow up care
- Comprehensive education programs
- Sleep disorders. Our specialized staff, operating under the supervision of board-certified pediatric sleep physicians, offer assessment and treatment of sleep disorders, including sleep studies to assess your child’s breathing while sleeping. Sleep studies are necessary to diagnose conditions like obstructive sleep apnea which can be seen in children who snore with other risks like having enlarged tonsils. Patients that are diagnosed with sleep related breathing disorders will be seen by our triple board certified pediatric pulmonary and sleep medicine physicians for further management.
- Chronic cough. Children with acute, long-lasting coughs are often referred to our physicians for evaluation of this often difficult-to-diagnose problem.
- Congenital abnormalities. We assess, diagnose and treat children with congenital breathing abnormalities.
- Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). A chronic lung condition that most often affects premature infants who needed oxygen or a ventilator, making breathing harder as the lungs grow and develop.
- Ventilator management. Specialized care to safely adjust and monitor breathing machines, helping children breathe more comfortably while supporting lung healing and growth.
- Tracheomalacia. A condition in which the airway is softer than normal and can partially collapse, causing breathing problems, noisy breathing or frequent respiratory infections.
- Chronic aspiration. When food, liquid, or saliva repeatedly enters the airway or lungs instead of the stomach, increasing the risk of coughing, choking and lung infections.
- Chronic lung disease. Long-term lung conditions that make breathing difficult and may require ongoing medical care, monitoring, and respiratory support.
- Recurrent wheeze. Repeated episodes of a whistling sound when breathing, often linked to airway narrowing, inflammation, or underlying lung conditions.
- Recurrent or difficult-to-treat pneumonia. Lung infections that happen often or do not improve with standard treatment, sometimes caused by airway, swallowing, or immune system issues.
- Noisy breathing. Abnormal breathing sounds such as wheezing that may signal airway narrowing, blockage or structural problems.
- Snoring. Loud or frequent breathing sounds during sleep that can be a sign of airway obstruction or sleep-related breathing disorders in children.
Technology Dependence Program for Children with Assistive Medical Devices
We offer specialized care for children dependent on assistive medical devices, such as oxygen, ventilators, tracheostomies or CPAP machines. The Technology Dependence Center was created to help educate patients and their families on how to provide quality medical care to children with special needs at home. Our services include:
- Education for patients and their families
- Consultation on assistive medical devices
- Coordination of care at home
Severe Asthma Center
RWJBarnabas Health has the only multidisciplinary center in New Jersey for severe asthma, combining the skills and expertise of both a pediatric pulmonologist and a pediatric allergist in one visit for a comprehensive evaluation of asthma. Patients in the severe asthma center perform pulmonary function tests (breathing tests) and get same-day skin testing for allergies. A pulmonary nurse and respiratory therapist provide comprehensive asthma education. Some patients that qualify will receive biologic therapy (asthma injections).
