Orthopedic Surgery

State-of-the-Art Surgical Treatments for Musculoskeletal Conditions

The musculoskeletal system includes the network of bones, muscles and joints, along with surrounding tendons, ligaments and connective tissues that give structure and mobility to your body. Orthopedic diseases or injuries can make support and movement more difficult and can result in discomfort and further injury. When this occurs, sometimes surgery may be necessary to restore proper function.

As the largest health system in the state, award-winning RWJBarnabas Health is proud to offer comprehensive, state-of-the-art orthopedic surgical treatments and procedures to our patients in New Jersey and the surrounding communities.

Our board-certified orthopedic surgeons are experienced in the treatment of a wide array of pediatric conditions from limb length discrepancies and spina bifida to degenerative conditions such as joint disease and arthritis, to sports and trauma-related injuries such as tennis elbow, bone fractures and rotator cuff injuries. In addition, most of our surgeons have completed advanced training with additional certifications in a number of focused orthopedic specialties.

Leading with Compassion

At RWJBarnabas Health, we understand that surgery is a big step, and often the last resort for many painful orthopedic conditions. Our physicians and surgeons take the time to discuss options and explore noninvasive treatment methods and therapies before recommending the more invasive route of orthopedic surgery.

Once it has been determined that surgery offers the most effective path to recovery, we take the time to counsel and guide our patients throughout the entire process. Our goal is to educate and prepare you for your upcoming procedure while creating an individualized treatment plan that works for you.

High-Tech Health

Advances in medical technology in the last half-century have led to new treatment options for injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

With access to state-of-the-art technologies, RWJBarnabas Health offers leading-edge orthopedic surgery in New Jersey. We offer numerous minimally invasive surgical treatments that provide pain relief and help restore functionality

Our skilled orthopedic surgeons perform highly precise robotic surgeries that rely on smaller incisions through the use of a robotic “arm” or instrument. The use of smaller incisions translates to less-invasive procedures, which in turn mean less pain and scarring, shorter hospital stays and reduced risk of infections in recovery.

When treating a variety of orthopedic conditions such as a sports injury, degeneration due to wear and tear, or various forms of arthritis, a patient is likely to explore options before considering surgery. Some therapies may include minimally invasive therapies and treatments such as physical therapy, medication or injections. When a patient cannot get total relief from such forms of therapy, orthopedic surgery may be an option.

RWJBarnabas performs a wide array of orthopedic surgeries in New Jersey. Some of the most common are:

  • Arthroscopy. This minimally invasive procedure uses fiber optic lighting directed through a thin tube (arthroscope), which is inserted along with a tiny camera into the affected joint. This can be done for the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, hip and ankle. Arthroscopy allows the surgeon to view the joint and repair the damage caused by injury or disease by using smaller incisions. Smaller incisions tend to cause less pain and quicker recovery times than in traditional open surgeries.
  • Joint replacement. Joint replacement surgeries include:
    • Partial and total knee replacements
    • Hip replacement
    • Shoulder replacement
    • Elbow replacement
    • Wrist joint replacements
    • Foot and ankle joint replacements
    • Revision joint replacements (replacing previously implanted joint replacement parts that have worn out)
  • Spine surgery. Nationally certified by the Joint Commission, we provide comprehensive treatments and surgeries for the spine, back and neck. Some of our procedures include:
    • Disc removal and disc replacement
    • Spinal fusion
    • Foraminotomy (removal of bone along the vertebrae to alleviate pressure)
    • Laminectomy (the removal of the bone along the spinal canal to help relieve pressure)

Some of the other orthopedic surgeries offered at RWJBarnabas Health include:

  • Achilles tendon repair
