Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program

New Jersey Teen Weight Loss Treatments

Childhood and adolescent obesity is an epidemic in the United States. Rates of diabetes, heart disease and other obesity-related conditions have been on the rise for several years now. This is largely due to obesity forming habits in childhood that carry on into adulthood.

For children between the ages of 16 to 18 or are already dealing with the physical challenges of obesity, there are adolescent-approved weight loss surgeries available. We are pleased to offer a multidisciplinary weight management team and a bariatric surgery program accredited as adolescent centers by The American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Facts About Teen Weight Loss Treatments

These procedures are just as safe for children as they are for adults and can significantly improve their health. Additionally, starting weight loss treatment at an early age will make it easier for them to continue healthy habits as they get older.

When Should a Teen Consider Bariatric Surgery?

In order to be a candidate for teen bariatric surgery, a patient must have a Body mass index over 35 with symptoms of obesity-related illnesses. Both the patient and their legal guardian must consent to the procedure and the patient must have reached a suitable level of physical and mental maturity.

Adolescent weight loss surgeries should never be undertaken until it has been proven that nonsurgical weight loss options will not produce the desired results.

Our weight loss professionals will discuss the pros and cons of weight loss surgery with you and your child. We take the time to make sure all parties fully understand the process and what will be required afterward before asking anyone to commit to weight loss surgery.
