Understanding Hydroponics
Hydroponic farming is a highly productive, environmentally friendly, and space efficient means of farming which offers numerous benefits for both the producer and consumer. It is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions that are delivered to the plants in irrigation water eliminating the need for soil. It saves water, eliminates agricultural runoff and chemical pesticide and offers the benefits of efficient, high-yield, local, year-round food production.
At The Beth Greenhouse, a continuous flow of nutrient rich water is recirculated in the system. We utilize one-tenth the water, one quarter of the fertilizer and one-eighth the space of a traditional agriculture operation. Our sterile, soil-free growing environment is off the ground on tables and in mobile containers eliminating the risk of pathogens. This is particularly important in light of the increase in food borne illnesses, such as E. coli and Salmonella.
