Knowing the Signs of Pediatric Diabetes

Diabetes that occurs in children is known as type 1 diabetes, which indicates that important, insulin-producing cells in the pancreas have been destroyed. There are numerous, telling signs that a child may be suffering from type 1 diabetes.

Signs of pediatric diabetes include:

  • Intense, frequent hunger
  • Increased thirst/frequent urination
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Blurry vision
  • Sweet-smelling breath
  • Nausea and vomiting

There is currently no known way to predict or prevent type 1 diabetes. However, the disease is manageable. At RWJBarnabas Health, our board-certified endocrinologists, dietitians, and specialists work closely with families dealing with pediatric diabetes to minimize the disease's effects and ensure the healthy development of the child.

Education and Awareness

No two children are alike and each one needs to be individually assessed for the best course of action to manage their diabetes.

RWJBarnabas Health will not only provide the treatment needed to manage a child's insulin levels, but give parents and families the education and awareness they need to make healthy, informed decisions about type 1 diabetes in their everyday life.
