Cardiovascular disease (CVD) in conjunction with thoracic disorders encompass a variety of conditions that affect the heart, lungs, mediastinum, esophagus, chest wall, diaphragm and great vessels. Some of these conditions include: heart failure, heart attack, peripheral artery disease, carotid artery disease, achalasia, pleural effusion, among many others. There are many things that can increase the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease and/or thoracic disorders, these are called risk factors. Some risk factors you cannot control (e.g. age, ethnicity, etc.), but there are many others that you can (e.g. diet, exercise, alcohol and tobacco use, etc.). Early detection and management of these factors is crucial to improving an individual’s quality of life.
