Your Destination for Thyroid Cancer Treatment

Many changes that occur in the thyroid gland are often easy to see but not all may be cancerous—some may not need treatment at all. As a leader in thyroid health, we offer comprehensive thyroid care, including diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer.

The American Cancer Society reports that oncologists are successful at finding many cases of thyroid cancer early so it can be treated successfully. In fact, the mortality rate for thyroid cancer is very low compared to other types of cancer.

Types of Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid Cancer

The four main types of thyroid cancer are:

  • Papillary carcinoma. This is the most common type of thyroid cancer, and it affects women more than men. According to the American Cancer Society, about eight out of 10 thyroid cancers fall into this category. They grow slowly, but can spread to the lymph nodes or neck.
  • Follicular carcinoma. About 10 percent of cases are more aggressive follicular carcinomas.
  • Medullary thyroid carcinoma. A type of thyroid cancer that commonly spreads to other parts of the body.
  • Anaplastic carcinoma. This is a rare type of thyroid cancer that grows quickly, is known to spread, and can be difficult to treat.

Parathyroid Cancer

Parathyroid cancer is a type of thyroid cancer found in the parathyroid, which are four glands attached to the thyroid gland. Parathyroid cancer is much harder to cure than thyroid cancer. This type of cancer is extremely rare, but something that our NJ cancer hospital can treat as well.

Oncology Experts in Thyroid Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosing thyroid cancer is typically done via any of the following: Physical exams, biopsies, imaging tests including radioiodine scans, blood tests, and vocal cord examinations (also called laryngoscopy).

Treatments for thyroid cancer include surgery, which is the most commonly deployed solution. Radioactive iodine is another option, which can destroy cancer cells that were not taken out during surgery. Thyroid hormone treatment, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and clinical trials offer even more options for thyroid cancer care.
