Same Day Surgery

New Jersey Minimally Invasive Surgeries

Not all surgery requires lengthy hospital stays and long recovery periods. In fact, with advancing medical research and technology, more and more procedures see patients undergoing surgery and returning home on the same day. Medical professionals prefer procedures that are minimally invasive as they pose fewer risks than open surgery and put far less strain on patients.

Preparation & Recovery

Preparing for a same day surgery is similar to preparing for any other procedure, the key difference being that you don’t need to plan for a lengthy hospital stay. Your surgeon or nurse will tell you what you need to do to prepare for your specific surgery, which may include meeting with an anesthesiologist, receiving an imaging test, and/or fasting for several hours before the operation.

Once your procedure is over, you will be brought to a recovery room where a registered nurse will assist you. It is strongly recommended that you have someone bring you to the hospital who can drive you home; this is a requirement if your procedure requires the use of anesthesia. While recovery periods for minimally invasive periods are generally shorter than open surgery, you may still feel some discomfort and need to take some time off your normal routine. Your doctor will tell you what you can and can’t do during this time and may prescribe pain medication.
