Sepsis Care Instructions

This guide shows you what you might expect during your hospital stay. Your stay may be different than what is pictured here based on your diagnosis. On your day of admission, you may have your vital signs, initial weight and routine work, blood and urine cultures, EKG, and Chest X-ray taken, and you will be asked to provide an accurate list of your medications.

Day One

Diet

Regular diet unless doctor states differently

Activity

Out of bed 2-4 hours a day

Ambulate 3 times daily

Daily physical therapy, if needed

Medications

*IV antibiotics

*IV fluid

*Pain medications

*Fever reducing medications

Treatments

Respiratory Therapy

Physical Therapy if needed

Oxygen if needed

Incentive spirometer

Testing

Routine Blood work

Blood Cultures

Urine Cultures

Other specific microbiologic tests as needed

Chest X-ray

EKG, if needed

Other imaging as needed

Planning for Home

Discharge planning

Begin to learn how to manage Sepsis at home

At Home

Diet

Regular diet

Stay hydrated

Activity

Slowly work up to 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week

Medications

*Take your medications as ordered by your doctor

*follow written medication plan

Respiratory Therapy

Physical Therapy if needed

Oxygen if needed

Incentive spirometer

Physical therapy if needed

Oxygen support if needed

Wound care if needed

Planning for Home

*Follow up appointment with primary care physician

*Expect a phone call within one week from hospital staff
