RWJBarnabas Health was among the first health systems in the state to implement structured, evidence-based models of care for supporting healthy moms, babies and families throughout the pregnancy journey, including mental health care. Innovative programs include:

• Centering Pregnancy. An evidence-based, group prenatal care model that brings together small groups of expectant parents with similar due dates. The program provides more time with healthcare providers, empowers moms to participate in their own care through health assessments, interactive education and peer support.
• TeamBirth NJ. A national evidence-based childbirth initiative in partnership with the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute. This structured program transforms labor and delivery by ensuring mothers, support people, and clinicians make decisions together, actively reducing communication gaps and improving maternal outcomes. The program supports better provider and patient communication to enhance the birthing experience and improve outcomes for moms and their babies.
• Center for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders. RWJBarnabas Health was the first health system in New Jersey to address the mental health challenges that can be associated with pregnancy and the first year following delivery. Two centers serve moms and families throughout the state.

When Your Baby Needs Special Care

With state-of-the-art technology and a staff of medical experts, our maternity centers are equipped to handle any emergency for mothers and babies before, during and after delivery. Counseling is available with our Maternal-Fetal Medicine (also called high-risk pregnancy) team for mothers with a history of complicated pregnancy or who have special concerns, such as multiple births or premature labor. Babies from throughout New Jersey are treated at our regional perinatal centers for such problems as:

• Congenital disorders

RWJBarnabas Health offers a comprehensive network of Level II, III, and IV Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), providing specialized care for premature infants and newborns with a wide range of medical needs. From Level II NICUs that care for babies requiring additional monitoring and support to Level III and IV NICUs that treat the most critically ill and medically complex newborns, families have access to advanced neonatal expertise and seamless coordination of care across New Jersey—ensuring every baby receives the right level of care, close to home whenever possible.
