An Anesthesiologists Responsibilities

Learn More About Our New Jersey Anesthesiology Team

Our anesthesiology team is responsible for ensuring patients are prepared to safely undergo sedation. In most cases where you require sedation for a surgery, you will meet with an anesthesiologist at an earlier date. During this meeting, the anesthesiologist will review your medical history and check that you will not have an adverse reaction to the sedative. This information will help them determine how much anesthesia you require to remain sedated throughout your operation.

On the day of your surgery, the anesthesiologist will be there to administer the sedative and monitor your vital signs. If you are feeling anxious because your procedure requires you to be asleep, rest assured that a trained specialists will be overseeing your status for the duration of the procedure.

Your anesthesiologist will play a major role in every step of your surgery:

  • Preparation – You will receive an anesthesiology consultation where the anesthesiologist determines how much anesthesia you need and tells you what you need to do to prepare.
  • During surgery – The anesthesiologists will administer the sedative and monitor your vital signs during the operation. If unexpected events occur during the procedure, the anesthesiologist will adjust your sedation as needed.
  • Recovery – It takes up to 24 hours to fully recover from anesthesia. Immediately following your procedure, your anesthesiologist will make sure that you are on track to make a full recovery from sedation and keep you comfortable. You should not attempt to drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after receiving anesthesia.
