Types of Liver Cancer

The two main kinds of pediatric liver cancer are:

  • Hepatoblastoma. This form of liver cancer typically does not spread past the liver, and is common in children under three years old.
  • Hepatocellular Carcinoma. This type of liver cancer can affect kids of any age, and is known to spread to other parts of the body.

Other forms of pediatric liver cancer include undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma and infantile choriocarcinoma.

Liver Cancer Stages

Childhood liver cancer is broken down into two stages:

  • Pre-surgical. This stage is based on where the tumor has spread to within the liver.
  • Post-surgical. This refers to how much of the tumor that still exists after surgery.

Medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and other care team members will work with you to accurately diagnose your child and give you every option possible for treatment.
