Gastric Sleeve Procedures
Weight Loss Surgeries
A gastric sleeve, also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, is an operation that permanently reduces the size of the stomach. By creating a smaller stomach, the stomach will fill more quickly, and the patient will feel satisfied from eating much less food. This procedure quickly become one of the most common and popular weight loss surgeries.
How it Works
Gastric sleeves surgeries can often be done with laparoscopes, meaning fewer incisions are needed and patients can heal faster. During the procedure, portions of the stomach are removed and stapled, leaving only a thin strip of “sleeve” of usable stomach behind. This does not interfere with the stomach’s ability to function, it merely makes it easier for the stomach to feel “full”.
Gastric bypass- The good:
- Patients typically lose between 60-75% of excess weight
- Can help patients manage diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and sleep apnea
- This procedure by itself often achieves the desires rules
- There are no changes in digestion or absorption processes in the stomach
Potential disadvantages:
- The procedure is not reversible
- You will need to adhere to certain dietary restrictions
- You may need to vomit if you eat more than your stomach can hold
- Stomach stapling sometimes causes complications
It is important to note that this procedure is not reversible. You should undergo gastric sleeve surgery until you have talked with a weight loss specialist and determined the best course for your weight management treatment.
