Prerequisites

EMT Initial Training

The State of New Jersey has some basic prerequisites:

  • You must be 16 years old prior to the first day of class. There are absolutely no exceptions to this.

  • You must be certified in BLS Provider Level CPR but RWJBarnabas Health will provide this training during orientation at the start of class regardless of whether or not you are currently certified so you do not need to obtain it prior.

Although not formal prerequisites, there are several other considerations you should be aware of:

  • The total cost of the class is $2,500. You should be financially ready to make the payments as outlined.

  • The textbook is at a 10th-grade level reading level and is approximately 1,500 pages. There is also a lot of memorization of the steps needed to complete skills. The workload is equivalent to taking 2 college courses so you need to leave time between class sessions to read, study, and practice.

  • State regulations require 100% attendance at all course sessions. Please do not register for a course unless you are absolutely certain you can attend all sessions.

  • State regulations only allow you to attempt didactic exams or psychomotor exams twice. Failure after the second attempt disqualifies you from continuing in the course automatically.

  • You must be physically to get up and down from the ground easily and lift at least 75 pounds.

  • You will need a social security number. If you do not have one, you will contact the National Registration of EMTs (NREMT) before starting the acceptance packet we provide. They will review your government status and provide a pseudo SSN.
