Abuse can affect a child’s physical and emotional health, even after the child is safe. With compassionate care and support, children and families can begin to heal.

At our hospitals in New Jersey, we care for children and families affected by physical abuse, sexual abuse or neglect. Our team provides proven mental health care in a compassionate way that respects each family’s culture and needs.

Our doctors, nurses, advanced practice providers (APPs), social workers and psychologists have special training in caring for children affected by abuse. We also work closely with the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P) and trusted state and community organizations.

Metro Regional Diagnostic and Treatment Center

The Metro Regional Diagnostic and Treatment Center (RDTC) at Children's Hospital of New Jersey in Newark is one of four centers in New Jersey approved by the state to evaluate and care for children who may have experienced abuse or neglect. The center mainly serves children and families who live in Essex County. Services include:

• Medical exams
• Immediate support during a crisis
• Mental health evaluations
• Therapy that helps children cope with trauma

Our medical and mental health services support children affected by physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, emotional abuse or trauma. We also offer education and therapy programs for families, along with training for health care professionals and community members who help protect children.

  The State Central Registry reviews every call. If an investigation is needed, local caseworkers or law enforcement will step in to ensure the child is safe and the family gets necessary help.
• Will my family be judged if we ask for mental health support?
  Never. Our medical professionals and counselors are strictly here to listen, support, and help your family heal in a completely confidential, non-judgmental space.
• How much does treatment cost?
  We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicaid. Financial assistance options are also available to ensure no child is denied care.
