U.S. News & World ReportRobert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset’s Diabetes Center provides an individualized program for self-management of diabetes, as well as educational services for outpatients and their families. The center’s goal is to provide people with diabetes the opportunity to live as normal and as full a life as possible.

The center, established in 1996, has been awarded its fourth three-year Education Recognition Certificate from the American Diabetes Association for continuing to meet national standards for quality diabetes self-management education.

The Diabetes Center offers:

  • One-on-one educational counseling
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Meal planning and nutritional counseling
  • Information on preventing complications
  • Resource management
  • Exercise planning
  • Insulin pump therapy by certified pump trainers
  • Psychosocial counseling
  • Family support
  • A gestational program for those with diabetes only during pregnancy

Our educational classes include:

  • Diabetes overview
  • Nutrition (includes meal planning and carbohydrate counting)
  • Fitness guidelines
  • Stress and weight management
  • Medications
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Foot care
  • Community resources
  • Behavioral goal-setting

Support Groups
Our support group at the hospital is Living Well with Diabetes (adult group), which is held quarterly. For dates, call 908-685-2846.

Our Staff
Directed by a board certified endocrinologist, the staff includes a clinical nurse specialist, an advanced practice nurse, certified diabetes nurse educators, registered dietitians and certified diabetes educators.

Exercise coaching support for those with Diabetes: RWJ Somerset Performance Fitness:

For those with diabetes, exercise can improve blood sugar, reduce body fat and stress, and lead to more efficient use of insulin by the body.

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset’s Sports Physical Therapy & Performance Center offers you support! Specializing in “Fitness over 50”, always have a coach to guide you toward your goals during an unlimited access, “try-before-you-buy” one-month trial! Group sessions offer attentive coaching in a small group “team” atmosphere, at a fraction of the cost of 1:1 personal training. For those who need more support and for those who need more individualized care, personalized written programs can be provided on a monthly basis.
