Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The Critical Care Center at Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is the state’s largest pediatric critical care unit, housing the cardiac intensive care and medical/surgical intensive care units. The multidisciplinary Pediatric Intensive Care Unit opened in early 2001, meeting a great demand in patient numbers and acuity throughout the state.
The Division of Pediatric Critical Care includes board-certified pediatric critical care intensivists and critical care nurses, who provide 24-hour in-hospital coverage seven days a week. In September 2001, the division assumed responsibility for the administration and care of patients for the Pediatric Special Care Unit at Monmouth Medical Center, also a member of RWJBarnabas Health.
The Leapfrog Group, a consortium of the largest purchasers of health care in the United States, has put forth several initiatives that it believes are necessary for quality comprehensive health care for its members and their employees. One of these initiatives is the concept of an “intensivist-led” interdisciplinary health care team in the intensive care unit. This model of care has been and continues to be the standard of practice on the critical care units at Children’s Hospital of New Jersey.
