Pediatric Psychiatric Services

Children's Hospital of New Jersey

A full continuum of care is provided, beginning with the Children’s Crisis Intervention Service (CCIS), an inpatient treatment program for children who are experiencing severe psychotic or behavioral disorders.

The staff at CCIS consists of two psychiatrists who are both board certified in child and adolescent psychiatry; and a multidisciplinary team of social workers, RNs, mental health workers, and activity therapists.

In addition, a wide range of ambulatory programs of varying intensities are available through the Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC) and the Community Mental Health Center to treat children and adolescents with a variety of behavioral difficulties such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), aggression, depression, and impulse control. Unique aspects of the pediatric psychiatry department program include:

  • The Community Mental Health Center, which offers assessment, individual, group and family therapy for children ages 5-17
  • The Therapeutic Learning Center features a preschool half-day partial hospitalization program for children 3 – 12 years of age

The 18-bed Children’s Crisis Intervention Service is the only CCIS unit licensed by the State Department of Health and designated by the Department of Human Services’ Division of Mental Health Services in Essex County.
