Our Heart Failure Treatment and Transplant Program is one of the top 15 heart transplant centers in the United States, and we have one of the most expansive structural heart disease and heart valve repair and replacement programs on the East Coast. Our Advanced Lung Disease and Transplant Program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is the only lung transplant program in New Jersey.

State-of-the-Art Lab Offers Latest Treatment for Vascular Disease

Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s Vascular Lab uses the newest equipment, techniques and devices for diagnosing diseases of the blood vessels like peripheral artery disease (PAD), atherosclerosis, abdominal and thoracic aneurysms, peripheral artery and visceral artery aneurysms, carotid artery disease, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pelvic venous disorders, varicose veins and spider veins.

Cardiac Cath Lab Offers New Jersey’s Widest Array of Catheter-Based Interventions

Newark Beth Israel Medical Center has one of the most clinically capable cardiovascular catheterization labs in New Jersey. Our experienced team of specialists perform more than 3,000 procedures each year using the newest equipment, techniques and devices for diagnosing and treating structural heart and vascular disease.

Innovative catheter-based interventions include complex high risk coronary angioplasty, heart rhythm abnormalities, pediatric congenital abnormality repairs, left atrial appendage closures (LAAC), structural (LARIAT and WATCHMAN procedures) and vascular diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, endovascular interventions, transcatheter heart valve replacements (TAVR/TMVR) and biopsies for both heart and lung transplantations.

Programs and Specialties

Newark Beth Israel Medical Center offers a wide array of programs and specialties that include:

  • Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program. Ongoing care to support the health of those born with congenital heart disease (CHD) is key. We offer the gold standard of care, combining our expertise with a full range of diagnostic, treatment and support services for individuals with congenital heart conditions.
  • Advanced Heart Failure/Cardiomyopathy Program. Our program provides extensive inpatient and outpatient clinical services to adults with cardiomyopathy and heart failure. From diagnosis to cardiac catheterization and innovative medical and device-based treatments, we offer comprehensive and compassionate care to help ensure the best possible outcomes.
  • Advanced Lung Disease and Transplant Program. Our advanced program is the only one of its kind in New Jersey and provides comprehensive treatment and management of chronic and complex lung diseases and pulmonary conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), complex lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, uncontrolled asthma, as well as lung transplant.
  • Amyloid Cardiomyopathy Program. At Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, we offer transplantation as an option for patients with end stage cardiac amyloidosis. We are one of the few programs in the country with outcomes that match those of patients undergoing cardiac transplantation for other reasons. We also offer routine genetic testing and counseling so a patient's family can learn more about their risk of developing cardiac amyloidosis.
  • Aortic Center. A multidisciplinary team of specialists collaborates to provide a full range of diagnostic, treatment (endovascular and minimally invasive surgical interventions) and support services for people with aortic diseases and aortic emergencies.
  • Arrhythmia Center. Our comprehensive atrial fibrillation (AF) center uses the most sophisticated cardiac diagnostic imaging technologies, therapies and advanced treatments.
  • Cardiac Diagnostic Testing. We pride ourselves on offering our patients the most advanced technologies and techniques including computed tomography (CT), fractional flow reserve – computed tomography (FFR-CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect a variety of cardiovascular conditions and thoracic disorders.
  • Cardiac Noninvasive Laboratory. Our full-service, accredited, noninvasive laboratory, the third largest in volume in New Jersey, provides echocardiography, stress and cardiopulmonary function testing as well as ambulatory 24-hour electrocardiogram monitoring (Holter) services. It is among the few facilities that have been granted accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) in Echocardiography, verifying that the laboratory has undergone a thorough review of its operational and technical components by a panel of experts.
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. Accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) and The Joint Commission (TJC), our outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program offers supervised lifestyle and exercise guidance to aid our patients in taking an active role in their ongoing heart health.
  • Cardiac Surgery. Our multidisciplinary cardiac team is expert in diagnosing and treating all cardiac valve syndromes and disorders, utilizing open procedures and safe and effective, minimally-invasive techniques whenever possible.
  • CardioMEMS Cardiac Monitoring Program. This program uses the CardioMEMS Heart Failure (HF) System, a miniature wireless monitoring sensor implanted in the pulmonary artery, to directly measure blood pressure and heart rate data. Patients can transmit this data from home to their health care providers, enabling them to stabilize the patient's blood pressure by managing medications effectively.
  • Cardio-Oncology Program. In collaboration with Rutgers Cancer Institute, we offer one of the few Cardio-Oncology programs in the region. For patients with pre-existing heart disease, we also take proactive steps to detect, monitor and treat cardiac conditions throughout a patient’s treatment and after therapy as part of your survivorship plan, utilizing advanced imaging, electrophysiology and laboratory evaluations.
  • Endovascular Center. This program focuses on limb salvage and complex coronary intervention. We perform minimally invasive procedures including protected percutaneous coronary intervention, (PCI), in which a small heart pump temporarily helps the heart pump blood during the placement of a stent.
  • Healthy Lives Program. Our program brings patients and caregivers together with our multidisciplinary team of medical experts to effectively monitor patients with heart failure, acute myocardial infarction (AMI), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). By providing education and fostering outreach, this program helps to provide interventions to manage symptoms and prevent the need for emergency care or hospital readmissions.
  • Heart Disease in Women. Heart disease is rising among women in the United States. Our Heart Disease in Women Program combines an unparalleled level of expertise comprising a full range of diagnostic, treatment and support services for our female patients.
  • Heart Rhythm Disorders Program. Our program provides innovative, multi-specialty care for patients with irregular heart rhythms, heart palpitations and rapid heartbeats. From evaluation to treatment, this unique program delivers the best possible outcomes for every patient — with compassion and care.
  • Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program. A heart transplant is a treatment option for cases of end-stage heart failure. The Newark Beth Israel Medical Center Heart Transplant Program provides access to world-renowned and award-winning heart transplant surgeons who lead the nation in innovation and technologies, offering the best care from start to finish.
  • Pacemaker and Defibrillator Center. Our Pacemaker and Defibrillator Center has been a forerunner in innovation and quality standards since its opening in 1967. Taking a patient’s lifestyle and medical needs into account, we treat patients with both permanently implanted pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). Our services include evaluations, programming, transtelephonic monitoring and more.
  • Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Program. Newark Beth Israel Medical Center offers the state’s largest, most comprehensive and only heart center that diagnoses and treats children and teenagers with heart problems. Some of our procedures include but are not limited to cardiac catheterizations, angioplasties, valvotomies and more.
  • Pediatric Cardiology Program. Newark Beth Israel Medical Center offers the state’s largest, most comprehensive, and only heart center that diagnoses and treats children with heart problems such as heart failure, murmurs, cardiomyopathy, Marfan syndrome and others.
  • Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease Program. The Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center offers advanced diagnosis, surgery and treatment procedures to help children with even the most complex heart defects grow up to lead full, active lives.
  • Structural Heart Disease Program. NBIMC’s Structural Heart Disease Program provides inventive, multi-specialty care for patients who suffer from complex valvular and/or structural heart disease. We provide traditional open-heart procedures, and less-invasive procedures whenever possible. Revolutionary, minimally invasive procedures using tiny implantable devices are changing the course of heart care. Procedures like these include transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) of which we perform than any other health care provider in New Jersey, transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR) , patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure and atrial septal defect (ASD) closure, alcohol septal ablation, and left atrial appendage closure (LAAC).
  • Thoracic Surgery Program. By utilizing the latest advancement and treatment options for disorders of the chest, lung, esophagus, trachea, pleura (lining of the chest) and mediastinum (middle section of the chest), our nationally-recognized thoracic specialists are able to perform the most advanced surgical procedures, including minimally invasive techniques whenever possible.
  • Valve Center. Performing more cardiac valve procedures than any other center in New Jersey, our experienced Valve Center offers the apex of collaborative care. We offer a spectrum of valve options, including minimally invasive valve repair services as well as valve replacements for you.
  • Vascular Care. We are pleased to offer the best vascular care in New Jersey. Our top-rated vascular surgeons, technologists and specialists utilize the latest high definition imaging systems, testing options and equipment to diagnose and treat diseases of the blood vessels, putting your health needs first. The noninvasive vascular laboratory has a 50-year history of diagnosing vascular disorders. The program offers the latest devices and advancements for treatment of peripheral vascular and aneurysmal disease, including fenestrated endografts, radial artery access and pedal access peripheral artery vascular interventions, venous interventions including stenting, thrombolysis, ablations, vena cava filter placements and removals, dialysis access and management, repair of aortic dissections and management of pelvic venous disorders.
