What is Melanoma?

Melanoma develops when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells, most often caused mainly by intense exposure to UV radiation (sunlight or tanning beds), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease, triggers mutations that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form tumors. Melanomas often resemble moles: the majority of melanomas are black or brown, but they can also be skin-colored, pink, red, purple, blue, or white.

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. While melanoma kills more than an estimated 10,000 people in the US annually, if it is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable. But if it is not recognized or treated early, the cancer can spread to other parts of the body, where it becomes hard to treat, and can become fatal.

Melanoma Treatments

The first step in treatment is usually the removal of the melanoma, and the standard method of doing this is by surgical removal. Our melanoma and skin care experts in New Jersey will consider not only the type of cancerous growth, but also take into account the stage of the disease, the size of the melanoma, what symptoms you’re experiencing, and whether it is superficial or invasive.

Our multidisciplinary teams are comprised of some of New Jersey's leading melanoma surgeons, and offer state-of-the-art evaluation programs and some of the most promising new therapies, including:
