Cardiac Care & Heart Center Units

When heart patients are admitted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, they are cared for in units dedicated to cardiac care. All 225 cardiac in-patient beds have monitors to provide continuous observation at every stage of a patient’s care. The Coronary Intensive Care Unit and the Cardiothoracic Surgical Intensive Care Unit care for acutely ill patients who are hemodynamically unstable, have life-threatening cardiac rhythm disturbances, or are recovering from cardiac surgery. Temporary transvenous pacemakers are available to treat patients with symptomatic bradycardia (slow heart rate). Intra-aortic balloon counter pulsation and ventricular assist devices are available to assist the failing heart.

Our telemetry and cardiothoracic surgical step-down units provide less intensive but highly specialized medical and surgical cardiac care for conditions including myocardial infarction (heart attack), congestive heart failure, and significant rhythm disturbances. In addition, patients who have undergone invasive and interventional cardiac procedures, as well as cardiac surgery, are closely monitored in these units.

The Medical Same Day Unit accommodates ambulatory patients or those admitted the day of the procedure for diagnostic catheterization, pacemaker generator changes, myocardial biopsies and cardioversion (restoration of normal heart rhythm).

In each setting, optimal patient care and comfort are provided by dedicated teams of nurses, technicians, pharmacists and staff specifically trained to care for cardiac patients.
