Family Centered Care Unit (Post Partum)

The Family Centered Care Unit is a warm comforting environment for families to encourage bonding and celebration. You will remain on the Family Centered Care Unit until you leave the hospital. When you arrive on the unit a staff member will orient you to your room and will give you a call bell so you have continuous access to our staff.

Our goal is to make you as comfortable as possible throughout your stay. A registered nurse will discuss the pain scale, your medications, and options for pain medications including their effects and side effects.

Members of our staff will round (stop in and interact with you) at least every hour during the day and every two hours during the night. Rounds may be more frequent if necessary.

Questions regarding infant feeding, bathing and diapering will be discussed along with information on newborn care.

Full Rooming In allows mom and baby to remain together 24 hours a day. Baby safety aspects of Rooming In will be explained upon admission to Family Centered Care.

At Saint Barnabas Medical Center, our policy is to endorse breast feeding as the optimal method of infant feeding. We encourage, empower and support all new moms and their families as they initiate breastfeeding and continue throughout their hospital stay and also at home after discharge. Lactation consultants are on staff if needed.

Birth Certificate and Social Security Information
A birth certificate department representative will obtain information after the delivery on your post partum unit. Birth certificates usually take 2-4 weeks and will be mailed to your home. Legal birth certificates are required by the State of New Jersey - every birth must be registered.

There is a section on the birth certificate form to request a social security number for your baby. It can take from 6 weeks to 8 weeks to receive the number from the Social Security office. The social security number will be mailed to your home.
