Prone Positioning for Breast Cancer Treatment

Saint Barnabas was also the first-in-state to introduce this technique for appropriately selected patients with breast cancer. Patients lay on a specially designed table to help women lay comfortably in a prone position on their stomach with the breast hanging away from the body. Lying in a prone position delivers the radiation to the cancer limiting the exposure to the surrounding organs and tissues, especially the heart and lungs. Prone-breast radiation also delivers a consistent and precise dose of radiation. The radiation is distributed evenly, accurately and directly to avoid the lung and heart tissues. For the larger-breasted patient, this method has been proven to reduce skin toxicity and improve long-term cosmetic outcomes.
