Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine

Pulmonology Services in New Brunswick

The Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) New Brunswick offers comprehensive testing, diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of lung diseases and respiratory conditions.

If your lungs aren’t functioning properly, we’ll help figure out why, and provide the treatments you need to breathe easier.

In partnership with Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, we provide:

  • Highly skilled physicians who are board certified in pulmonary medicine, interventional pulmonology, critical care and sleep medicine
  • Powerful, modern bronchoscopic technology that enables us to diagnose and treat many conditions with minimally invasive tools
  • Experienced support professionals who coordinate all aspects of patient care
When complex illness requires a patient to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), our doctors are essential members of that patient’s multidisciplinary critical care team. Respiratory issues can interfere with a variety of bodily functions, so pulmonary care is often provided in collaboration with other specialties at the hospital, including thoracic surgery, cardiac services, infectious disease, gastroenterology and endocrinology, as well as with our partners at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Pulmonary Function Laboratory

The Pulmonary Function Lab at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) New Brunswick administers pulmonary function tests (PFTs) for adults and children.

If you are having trouble breathing, your physician may prescribe one or more PFTs to determine how well air moves through your lungs and whether the lungs are oxygenating the blood well.

Results of these tests can help doctors diagnose lung diseases or conditions including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) and shortness of breath or chronic cough caused by occupational or environmental exposure.
