Preparing For Your Surgery

Robotic-Assisted Joint Replacement Surgery

RWJ Hamilton is the only orthopedic program in the Capital Region to offer MAKOplasty®, an innovative orthopedic surgical technology. The benefits of robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery include:

  • Precision and accuracy
  • Smaller incision
  • Less scarring
  • Minimal hospitalization

Physicians performing robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery are:

  • Michael Duch, MD
  • John Nolan, MD
  • Arjun Saxena, MD
  • John Schnell, MD, section chief, orthopedic surgery

Knee Replacement

Procedures available to patients include arthroscopy, total knee replacement, partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement, kneecap replacement (patellofemoral arthroplasty) and complex or revision knee replacement. Options include customized knee implants and minimally-invasive techniques such as quadricep-sparing surgery.

Makoplasty robotic-assisted surgery is available for patients who can benefit from partial knee replacement, which targets only the part of your knee damaged by osteoarthritis, replacing the diseased part of your knee while helping to spare the healthy bone and ligaments surrounding it.

Hip Replacement

Procedures available to patients include arthroscopy, total hip replacement and complex or revision joint replacement. Total hip replacement is the gold standard for treating osteoarthritis and hip fracture. Options include Makoplasty robotic-assisted surgery and muscle-sparing techniques.

The direct anterior approach to hip replacement is a minimally invasive technique that offers many potential benefits to patients who are interested in returning to an active lifestyle quickly after their procedure. This surgery does not cut into the gluteal muscles (muscle sparing) or damage the back side of the hip joint. This means that patients have no problem bending forward after surgery and don’t have to restrict their activities as they would with a typical approach to hip replacement.
