Language Access Services

At RWJBarnabas Health, we provide timely language access to our patients with limited English proficiency and their loved ones. We provide free language services, including qualified interpreters, to people whose primary language is not English. Language Assistance Services information is provided in multiple languages.

As safety is our number one priority, we deliver accurate and consistent interpretation services, ensuring that communication with each person is effective and reliable. We make sure the line of communication is clear between our patients/families and the doctors, nurses and staff.

Patient Experience 6 Martti
A Martti interpreter facilitates a medical conversation between physicians and patients.

This reliable technology bridges the language barrier gap providing the opportunity for our patients with limited English proficiency to speak up and be heard, and furthers our mission to overcome health disparities.

A Success Story

“As a cancer doctor in Newark, many of my patients require interpretation services. It is a must that I educate my patients as thoroughly as I can in their native tongue. I have used a telephone language service thousands of times, and was a little nervous about this Martti type robot now in the room. But now I am a total convert! I have been thrilled with the convenience and ease of using Martti! It is almost like having another person in the room, one whose facial expressions and body language I can observe during difficult conversations. I sit where I can see the face of the patient and the face of the interpreter and this has opened up a whole new level of communication!”
