Lymphedema Program
Women who undergo a mastectomy, breast conservation surgery that involves the removal of lymph nodes from the underarm or radiation therapy are at risk for developing lymphedema.
This condition is a buildup of lymphatic fluid in the arm that can cause swelling in the arm or fingers, pain and discomfort, and even infection. Lymphedema can occur anytime — immediately after surgery, radiation therapy or even years later.
Offered through Community Medical Center’s Department of Rehabilitation Services, the Lymphedema Program offers a comprehensive approach to care that focuses on early assessment and treatment. Our physical therapists are specially certified in lymphedema treatment to help improve function and prevent long-term complications through:
- Manual lymph drainage that stimulates the lymphatic system and reduces swelling.
- Bandaging to prevent additional production and reaccumulation of lymph fluid.
- Remedial exercise to activate the muscle groups of the swollen limb.
- Patient education, including skin care recommendations and nutritional counseling.
- Home exercise program.
