Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey offers clinical pastoral education (CPE) in Summer Intense, Extended (academic year) and Residency programs. Summer and Extended programs offer one unit of CPE, whereas during Residency, three units can be earned. Each unit consists of a minimum of 400 hours of supervised learning (300 hours of direct patient care and 100 hours of seminars and supervision).
RWJUH is accredited by ACPE, Inc. as a CPE Center. ACPE, Inc. is, in return, accredited by the U.S. Department of Education and is subject to all of its policies and procedures pertaining to quality and accountability in education.
CPE is a method of learning by doing. Students are assigned to certain patient care areas where they minister to patients, their families, and staff; experiences will be reflected upon in subsequent seminars with peers and educators. Because of the Center's geographic location in Central New Jersey, it offers a rich experience of learning with and from, a variety of ethnic groups, cultures, and religions.

Tuition for summer intensive and academic year part-time program is $400.

CPE Program Schedule 2024 – 2025 Academic Year
The CPE Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is offered in full-time or part-time programs, to best fit students' needs.
Summer Intensive
May 28th, 2024 – August 9th, 2024
Full-time course hours: Monday - Fri, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Includes 24-hour in-house shifts on evenings and weekends
Academic Year Extended/Part-Time
September 11th, 2024 – May 14th, 2025
Part-time course: Wednesdays, 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
12-hour in-house shifts during weekends and 4 hours clinical time during the week
Supervision approximately every other week apart from Wednesday class or clinical hours
Residency
August 19th, 2024 – June 6th, 2025
Full-time course: Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
24-hour in-house shifts during the week (some weekends and holidays included)
There is a stipend available as well as benefits, PTO and sick time
Prerequisites: One Unit of CPE and a Master of Divinity degree (or its equivalent). HR Orientation as scheduled.
