Bariatric Surgery Pre-Operative Instructions

The Week Before Surgery

  • Review your medications with your medical doctor and your surgeon, including all over-the-counter supplements and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) — such as ibuprophen, acetaminophen, naproxen and aspirin — to identify which should be stopped prior to surgery.
  • Refrigerate your pre-surgery drinks — they taste better when cold.

The Day Before Surgery

  • The day before surgery, you will receive a call after 3 p.m. informing you of the time you should arrive at the hospital. If we are unable to reach you, we will call you back again after 6 p.m. If by 8 p.m. you have not received a call, please call (732) 828-3000, x5680. After 9:30 p.m., please call extension 5783.
  • Take a Hibiclens shower in the evening.
  • Non-diabetics: Please consume 2 bottles of pre-surgery drink (which we will provide to you) in the evening.
  • Sleep in fresh pajamas and fresh sheets.

The Day of Surgery

  • No solid foods or smoking after midnight.
  • Take your Hibiclens shower in the morning.
  • Non-diabetic patients: Please consume one pre-surgery drink (which we will provide to you) on the morning of surgery before leaving the house.
    Diabetic patients: Drink 10 ounces of a low- or zero-sugar clear electrolyte drink before leaving the house.
  • Take all your medications as per your doctor’s instruction.
  • Leave all valuables at home including all rings, body piercings and watches.
  • Leave all your medications at home.
  • Do not wear contact lenses.
  • Do not wear any perfume, colognes or lotions.
  • Bring insurance information and a photo ID.
  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing and comfortable rubber-soled shoes.
  • Arrive at the main entrance of the hospital: 180 Somerset Street, New Brunswick NJ 08901.
  • At the Information Desk, ask to be directed to Same Day Surgery, located on the first floor in the Core Pavilion.
