Nutrition & Support for Weight Loss

Nutrition plays a huge role in bariatric surgery both before and after the procedure. A balanced and safe nutrition program is an integral key to the lifestyle change that comes with bariatric surgery.

You will work closely throughout the program with our dietitian to analyze your past diet regimens and you will learn how to achieve a totally balanced diet.

Weight Loss Support Group

Perhaps one of the most important pieces of a comprehensive bariatric surgery program is the after-surgery support group. Attending a support group allows you to share your own personal experiences in open discussion and enables you to participate with your peers who are going through a similar situation. The support group is for post-surgery patients and addresses topics like snacking, meal portions and self-esteem. Continue your support here and who knows, you may even make a friend out of it!

New Brunswick Campus
RWJ’s support groups are held on the 1st Tuesday of every month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the RWJ Fitness & Wellness Center in New Brunswick, NJ.

Somerset Campus
RWJ’s support groups are held on the 4th Tuesday of every month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the family Practice Building on the RWJ Somerset campus.

Bariatric Medical Wellness Programs

As part of the continued support services for bariatric surgery patients at RWJ, a supervised exercise program was developed in conjunction with our partners at RWJ Fitness & Wellness Center.

Once you are cleared by your physician, you will need to incorporate an exercise program into your daily routine.

The program offers both adult and adolescent patients a physician-supervised exercise program and is overseen by specially-trained exercise professionals.

About the Program

  • 8 weeks (1 hour, 2 days per week)
  • Small groups, no larger than six members per class
  • Classes held in a private studio
  • Bariatric sensitivity training given to all physiologists
  • Your routine follow-up testing conveniently tracked through the program.

Bariatric Surgery Information Sessions

For many, the weight-loss journey begins by attending one of our information seminars. Seminars provide patients with the chance to meet our physicians, ask questions and address concerns they may have about surgery. It’s also an opportunity to connect with other potential and former patients.

Sessions are held at 7 p.m. at both our New Brunswick and Somerset locations as follows:

  • New Brunswick: The last Wednesday of every month
  • Old Bridge: The second Wednesday of every month
  • Somerset: The 1st Thursday and 3rd Tuesday of every month
