Med Central, the Communications Center for Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital’s Mobile Health Service, is among the busiest Emergency Medical Service communications center in New Jersey, processing over 140,000 requests for service annually. At peak, Med Central provides dispatch services for 17 Advanced Life Support units and 30 Basic Life Support units in greater Somerset and Middlesex Counties. Med Central coordinates the efforts of these units over an area in which 1.2 million people live.

The Communications Center is finishing a multiple phase renovation to improve its technical capabilities and call capacity. When completed in the Spring 2015, the center will be able to accommodate 16 communications staff. With the completion of the first phase of the renovation, Robert Wood Johnson Mobile Health Service units migrated to the New Jersey Interoperable Communication System for radio coverage. Med Central operates on this 700MHz P25 compliant digitally trunked radio system, as well as maintaining its own VHF radio networks.

Med Central provides 9-1-1 Emergency Medical Dispatch screening for the City of New Brunswick, as well as Milltown, East Brunswick and Edison Township. The center is the dispatch point for the MICU and BLS units of the Raritan Bay Medical Center and JFK Medical Center. Med Central also dispatches the New Brunswick Fire Department for medical emergencies within the city. The communications center is also the backup dispatch center to University Hospital of New Jersey for the assets of the New Jersey EMS Task Force.
