How to Become a Teen Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in our Teen Volunteer Program. During this summer program, our teens support staff, patients and their families through many different departments.

Initial applications will be received from Monday, March 2, to Monday, March 20. Please be aware that places are limited, and your application may be added to a waitlist.

We do not offer internships or shadowing opportunities to teens and the department is unable to send applications at a parent’s request.

Teen Volunteer Service Requirements

  • Teen Volunteers and patientAge: 16 years and older
  • Students: Teens currently enrolled in grades 10-12.
  • Transportation: To help ensure our volunteers can actively participate in the program and have adequate transportation, it is recommended teen volunteer applicants reside within approximately 15-20 miles of our hospital’s location at 1 Hamilton Health Place, Hamilton Township, New Jersey, 08690 (Mercer County).
  • Time Commitment:
    • The summer program will run for 7 weeks, from July 6 to August 21.
    • Volunteers are expected to attend two 4-hour shifts for the duration of the program without exception.
    • Shifts are Monday through Friday, morning and afternoon only.
  • Cell Phone Usage: Mobile phones and smart devices are prohibited during volunteer shifts at the hospital.
  • Dress Code: All volunteers will wear a uniform consisting of tan-colored pants and a volunteer coat provided by RWJBarnabas. A professional groomed appearance is required at all times.
  • Vaccination: All volunteers MUST be fully vaccinated. This requirement includes Measles, Mumps, Chicken Pox, Hepatitis B (blood test required regardless of vaccination status), Three Hepatitis B vaccinations, Proof of Vaccine for TDaP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis), Annual Flu, and TB Screening.

Teen Volunteer Application Process:

  • After receipt of the Volunteer Interest Form, the Volunteer Resource Office will schedule a brief interview with the student applicant. Please allow time for the department to reply.
  • A more detailed application (provided after the initial screening) is required.
    • Reference Forms: to be completed by H.S. guidance counselor, and one personal reference.
    • Medical Clearance
      • Medical Attestation Forms to be completed by a student’s physician, including all current medical requirements to ensure up-to-date immunization status, including the flu vaccine. Volunteers MUST be fully vaccinated.
      • Urine Drug Screen (conducted at RWJ Corporate Care/Employee Health at no charge to the volunteer).
  • Completion of an Online Orientation Program: This includes important safety and regulatory information necessary for all volunteers.
  • In-Person Orientation: Teens are expected to attend an in-person orientation on in the afternoon of Wednesday, July 1, or Thursday, July 2, 2026.
