EMT Initial Training

nj emtStudents will learn to assess and appropriately treat conditions ranging from simple fractures, stroke, and chest pain to critical trauma, cardiac arrest, and childbirth. Upon completion of the course, students are eligible to test for certification within the State of New Jersey or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Depending on your learning preference, we currently have 2 options to attend an initial EMT program.

Our Traditional EMT initial education course is a designed to train individuals to provide comprehensive emergency medical care at the basic life support level to victims of illness or injury. The course is a combination of classroom lectures, hands on and simulated skills sessions, and clinical time performed within the hospital. We are currently working on getting our EMT information, schedule, and registration packet posted here as soon more becomes available.

Below you will find upcoming Emergency Medical Technician training being offered by RWJBarnabas Health, how to apply to become part of our instructional staff, and FAQ's. If you have any questions after reviewing this page, please contact BLS Educator Chris Ireland at chris.ireland@rwjbh.org.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are classes held?

  • Classes are held at various RWJBarnabas Health campuses so please be sure you know where you will be traveling to. You cannot be more than 15 minutes late to any class session per state regulations so please make sure you plan on travel time even during rush hour.
Are there classes at other RWJBarnabas campuses?
  • Yes, we do offer core refresher and CEU classes at several of our campuses. Courses can be found at www.trainingcentertechnologies.com/RWJBH by using the filters at the top.
How old must you be to become an EMT?
  • State regulations require you to be 16 years old prior to the first day of class – no exceptions.
Does this course require a lot of outside class work?
  • This course requires a lot of reading and studying. Students read an average of 200 pages of material per week. So, in addition to class time, please make sure you have enough time on non-class days to study.
What is the difference between your traditional and hybrid course?
  • Traditional courses give students lectures and hands on skills sessions. Hybrid training provides skills sessions only meaning the hybrid student must be highly motivated to complete all reading and explore concepts individually to ensure comprehension.
Am I eligible to take the certification exam after any of your courses?
  • Yes. Both our traditional and hybrid courses allow you to take the NJ EMT Certification Exam once completed successfully.
What is a New Jersey Training Fund Form?
  • If you volunteer on a rescue squad, you may be eligible to receive this form which waives the $1,200 tuition. You are still responsible for the pre-registration fee and uniform(s). Our hybrid course is our only offering that does not accept the training fund form.
Why is the pre-registration fee non-refundable?
  • The pre-registration fee is used to purchase you access to our online learning management system that you will use in class. Access is purchased upon payment submission so no refund is available.
Are there any loans or monthly payment options available to cover tuition?
  • No.
Is this course free for RWJBarnabas Health employees?
  • No. However, employees may be eligible for tuition reimbursement. Please contact Human Resources to find out if your position is eligible.
Why do you require uniforms and how much are they?
  • EMT’s must look professional when interacting with patients and training is no exception. Average pricing is $25/shirt and $25/pant. Pricing on black boots and belts varies. This is additional cost above your tuition.
Do I really need 100% attendance?
  • State regulations require 100% attendance. Our classes work in 4-hour blocks. We will allow you to make up (2) 4-hour sessions. There are no exceptions beyond this.
Can I get high school or college credits for this course?
  • This is up to your learning institution. A syllabus is provided under our course listing above. You will need to ask your school for more information. We are happy to provide a record of your grades after course completion.
Do you make accommodations for students with disabilities or English as a second language learners?
  • If you have had an IEP written in the last 5 years that specifies you should have extended testing time, you will have one and half times the allotted time to take written exams including the state exam. The state does expect students to be proficient in English to be effective EMT’s. Please contact us for all other ADA related questions so that we may best assist you individually in determining what accommodations we may be able to provide.
