Overview: Skin conditions are a constant and frequent occurrence in wrestling, and the proper identification and treatment of these conditions is important. Often times skin checks are not done properly or frequently enough to catch the early stages of many skin infections. When not detected early, skin conditions will often spread through the team, potentially removing multiple athletes from participation. While the final say is not in our control as athletic trainers, we still hold power as the medical professionals on-site to protect our athletes. Quality purposeful skin checks on a frequent basis help to prevent the spread of these conditions throughout the team. There are many good resources to help you recognize these conditions, but little on how and when to do skin checks. This will give a systematic skin check process to use at your sites, enhancing your ability to be consistent at spotting skin conditions before they can spread.

Educational presentation objectives for Tuesday, November 13th

1- Provide an overview of a method for consistent skin checks for wrestling.

2- Understand the importance of frequently doing skin checks outside of match days.

3- Review clear treatment plans for identified skin conditions and return to participation.

4- Discuss methods to have coaching staff and parents on board with frequent skin checks.

Bio- Sean is a graduate of Rowan University in 2012 and has been practicing athletic training in the secondary school setting since the summer of 2013. His first job was at Holy Cross Prep in Delran New Jersey and this is where his passion for wrestling athletic training began. His first year was a learn by doing experience with no prior experience with high school wrestling. He used the knowledge of more experienced athletic trainers in Burlington County to help him learn skin condition checks and procedures. In his 3 years at Holy Cross he continued to grow his passion for wrestling with a very competitive wrestling team paired with being the host school for districts. He took a position with RWJBH athletic training in the fall of 2016 as an athletic trainer at Somerville High School. He brought his passion for wrestling and performing skin checks to protect his wrestlers to Somerville even though the county was not as strict in their procedures. He has worked to increase the coaches and parents awareness of the importance of skin checks by a medical professional. He has shared his knowledge and experience with the RWJBH athletic training team and hopes to spread this knowledge to any athletic trainers who want assistance with skin checks.
