If you are experiencing severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain/pressure, confusion or bluish face/lips, then you must go to the hospital. If you have mild symptoms, stay at home and take care of yourself in isolation (away from other people).

About the hospital

If I do not have health insurance or am undocumented, can I go to the hospital?

• No sick patient will be turned away from the hospital – regardless of insurance or immigration status.
• Doctors and nurses are there to help – they will not call ICE or try to deport you.
• The hospital’s main goal is to take care of you and send you home healthy and safe. YOU are the #1 priority.

What do I do when I get to the hospital?

• Find the emergency room entrance. Look for signs or ask any hospital staff member.
• What the medical staff needs to know – TELL THEM:
  • Your name, age, symptoms AND the contact information of a family member or friend.
  • If you have tested positive for COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone with the virus.
  • If you have allergies or any chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, or high blood pressure. Note all medical history such as previous heart attacks or surgery.
  • Any medications you take.
• Follow the direction of the medical staff – they are doing everything they can to help you
• If you have not already, tell a friend or family member you are at the hospital seeking treatment

Please note: You will NOT be asked about your legal status in the U.S. You will receive the care that you need regardless of legal status.

About testing

To get tested, you must:

• Be experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, sore throat, and worsening cough
• Have traveled to areas/countries where COVID-19 is widespread OR Have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19

Criteria

If I DO NOT HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE, but I meet testing criteria, can I get tested?

• YES, you can get tested for COVID-19.
• Since March 18, the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) provides coverage for COVID-19 testing, even if you are uninsured.
• Important to note: Although the COVID-19 test is covered, accompanying doctor’s appointments or other related tests may not be covered. Visit HRSA.gov to find a Federally Qualified Health Center which will provide care based on your income level.

If I am UNDOCUMENTED, but I meet testing criteria, can I get tested?

• YES, you can get tested for COVID-19.
• According to U.S. Citizens and Immigration Services (USCIS), seeking treatment or testing for COVID-19 WILL NOT negatively affect you as part of a future Public Charge analysis.
• Under the FFCRA, the test will be covered if you are uninsured.

Anyone and everyone who fits testing criteria can be tested for COVID-19.

Criterios
