    Max

Eleonore Cohen, former mayor of Livingston, couldn’t say enough about her husband Max’s positive experiences at Saint Barnabas. In her words… “The nurses, and every other person we came in contact with, were caring, pleasant and professional. The woman who cleaned the room was proud of what she did and told us. The gentleman who transported Max for his scan was charming and careful. After surgery, my husband had several tests and treatments in the radiology department. Each time he returned home, Max commented on how attentive and nice everyone he encountered was. The new facility at Saint ...

    Joanna

Joanna Piekarz is what you’d call a survivor. As a young girl, she endured forced labor during World War II. As a devoted mother of three, she emigrated from Poland in pursuit of liberty and the American dream. And most recently, at 89 years of age, the tenacious Cranford resident took one of her greatest challenges yet – advanced heart disease – by undergoing open heart surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility. When other doctors deemed Joanna too weak and too “high risk” for surgical intervention, doctors at SBMC agreed to operate – giving the beloved ...

    Jean

Jean Smith lives by the phrase “live every day like your last” after going through radiation and chemotherapy for cancer and then undergoing both heart and kidney transplants. Jean was fairly knowledgeable of the treatments she would need because of her experience as a nurse. She received radiation and chemotherapy treatment at Saint Barnabas Medical Center where she stayed strong and was supported ...

    Colbea, Cooper & Chase

It was November 3, 2008, when Colbea, Cooper and Chase were born after only 23 weeks and 4 days gestation. It was a bittersweet day. Our babies were here, but much too soon. How could this happen when our first son Tyler, who was only 11 months old at the time, was a full term baby? We were given the grim statistics of one child born at 23 weeks and the decreasing survival rates for triplets born at their gestational age. Thankfully the Saint Barnabas NICU is one of the best units in the country. When our babies were born they were unable to breathe on their own, their eyes were fused shut and ...

    Greg

Just two months after my kidney transplant last summer, I was at the driving range swinging a golf club. I felt great! And, second only to my younger sister who selflessly donated her kidney, I credit Saint Barnabas Medical Center and the care I received there with my continued healthy recovery. I am a golfer by nature. I began playing at seven years old. Golf is a game of repetition. You find out what works and you do it over and over. This is how I have approached my recovery thanks to my team at Saint Barnabas. They have always given me the detailed instructions and information I need to ...

    Fred & Tristia

When Tristia Cosgrove of Jefferson Township was 11 years old, her mother brought her to the family pediatrician with flu-like symptoms. Tests revealed her kidneys were failing, a result of having been born with a malformed renal system. Tristia’s parents, Fred and Pat, were struck with fear. “It was brutal to hear that news — one of the hardest things we’ve ever had to take,” says Mr. Cosgrove. Tristia immediately began hemodialysis and soon experienced numerous infections, missing a few hours of school two days each week, and spending Saturdays at the dialysis center. Her parents, along with ...

    Mike

For Mike DiPiano, Athletic Director at St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, a complication of diabetes he developed during adolescence led to kidney failure and the need for dialysis treatments three times a week. After two years of dialysis, a stranger’s untimely death provided the 48-year-old husband and father of three teenagers with the opportunity for a simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplant at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Today, Mike heightens community awareness by speaking to adult and student groups about giving the gift of life. “I would do anything anyone asked of me to ...

    Felice

Felice Carpenito enjoyed running so much that he often ran twice a day. But pounding the pavement for more than 20 years finally took its toll on the 75-year-old Verona resident. A few years ago, Felice started experiencing excruciating “bone on bone” knee pain during his daily runs at Verona Park. After running, he often had sharp pain in his knee. Felice dealt with the pain and tried to run through it. He sought medical treatment from local doctors who chalked up the pain to arthritis. Since he couldn’t find a doctor who was willing to perform knee surgery because “it wasn’t the right time,” ...

    Anthony & Wilkis

Emotionally-Related Kidney Transplant During his senior year of high school, Anthony’s life was changed when he was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease and had to begin dialysis. As an athlete and one of the top Judo players in his school, Anthony never expected something like this to happen to him. As his health grew worse, he lost weight and found it hard to focus on his school work. “When my brother Wilkis agreed to donate, I was glad that he'd end my nightmare,” says Anthony. For Wilkis, there was never any question whether he would donate. “My brother is very important to me and I love ...

    Greg & Joe

Greg, Recipient Joe, Donor Friend-to Friend Emotionally-Related Kidney Transplant As Maplewood Firefighters, Joe and Greg had worked side by side for years. During that time they had become more that co-workers. They became real friends. Over time, Joe saw Greg getting sicker and sicker until he couldn't bear to watch anymore. “I knew he was on the transplant list, sitting, waiting every day for a kidney to become available, but I just felt like I had to do something more. So, I decided to give him one of my kidneys,” explains Joe. For Greg, life after his kidney transplant is so much better. ...
