Internal Medicine Residency
at Monmouth Medical Center
Message from the Program Director, Dr. Doantrang Du

Greetings!
Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC). As Program Director, it is my privilege to welcome you to our hospital and share the many opportunities and strengths that make our program an outstanding choice for your training.
Monmouth Medical Center has been at the forefront of medical education in Monmouth County since the 1950s. We are a three-year categorical community-based program affiliated with Rutgers Health. For more than seven decades, MMC has trained physicians who have gone on to excel in their fields locally and nationally. The hospital hosts residencies across multiple disciplines—including Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Surgery, Orthopedics, Dentistry, Radiology, Pharmacy, and Pathology—making MMC a vibrant academic environment.
Residency Training Experience
Our mission is to provide patient-centered, evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and equitable training with exposure to a wide range of pathology to prepare residents for private practice, academic medicine, or fellowship. Training at MMC ensures that residents develop strong clinical skills through in-hospital and ambulatory care, supplemented by robust procedural training in our Simulation Lab.
Education is delivered through bedside rounds, didactic sessions, interactive activities, and one-on-one mentoring. Beyond the traditional subspecialties of Internal Medicine, our curriculum emphasizes medical ethics, psychosocial care, cost-conscious practice, decision making, and palliative care. Residents also gain valuable teaching experience with Rutgers–Robert Wood Johnson medical students. Scholarly work is highly encouraged and well supported, with many residents presenting at national meetings and publishing peer-reviewed research.
Diversity, Faculty, and Community
At MMC, we foster an inclusive environment where the uniqueness of every resident is celebrated. Our residents come from diverse backgrounds that make up a whole panoply of experiences. We strive to be your second home during these three years of training- one in which you are supported and encouraged to reach your fullest potential.
Our dedicated faculty—many of whom are recognized as “New Jersey Top Doctors” and recipients of numerous teaching awards from Rutgers—are passionate about education and mentorship. Their commitment ensures that residents are challenged, nurtured, and guided throughout their training.
The results speak for themselves: over the past four years, our residents have achieved a 100% ABIM Board pass rate, consistently placing us among the top programs in New Jersey.
Hospital Excellence and National Recognition
Our institution is recognized for its commitment to quality, safety, and innovation. MMC has consistently earned an “A” rating for safety, quality, and efficiency from the Leapfrog Group—the most times of any hospital in our region. We were named to Newsweek’s list of America’s Best-In-State Hospitals (2025), included for four consecutive years in Newsweek’s Global Best Hospitals, and recognized among the Top 100 Community Hospitals by Becker’s Healthcare Review.
The hospital is also among just 148 U.S. hospitals named to the digital platform Money’s inaugural list of Best Hospitals in America, and ranked 29th among the 50 Best Major Teaching Hospitals by Washington Monthly.
MMC is proud to be the first hospital in New Jersey and the fifth in the country to earn Magnet Recognition with Distinction®, and to be one of only 96 U.S. hospitals honored with the Emergency Nurses Association’s Lantern Award for excellence in emergency care.
Living and Training in Monmouth County
Monmouth County has been ranked among the Top Ten Best Counties to Live In by NICHE. With its beautiful beaches, parks, and thriving culinary scene, our location offers residents an excellent quality of life outside of training.
In closing, Monmouth Medical Center offers an unparalleled combination of nationally recognized hospital excellence, a diverse and inclusive residency culture, a strong academic foundation, and a supportive community. We are proud of our tradition of training well-rounded, compassionate, and skilled internists who are prepared to thrive in any career path.
Thank you for your interest, and I invite you to explore further the opportunities that await you here at Monmouth Medical Center.
Warm regards,
Doantrang Du, MD FACP
