Pediatric Plastic Surgery Program

The Pediatric Plastic Surgery Program offers a full range of treatment for acquired and congenital problems that require therapeutic or cosmetic reconstruction.

Multidisciplinary Team Approach

Some children with complex problems may require the expertise of a variety of pediatric specialists beyond those in our Pediatric Plastic Surgery Program. For situations that require a multidisciplinary approach, BMSCH offers a wealth of expertise in every pediatric field, including radiology, anesthesiology, endocrinology, neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedics and urology. Whenever necessary, specialists from across the spectrum of care will work together to meet the needs of our young patients.

Comprehensive Services

  • Cutaneous Plastic Surgery

    Children with congenital birthmarks including nevi and moles (of any size), as well as cutaneous cysts and complex skin tumors can usually be treated as outpatients. If surgery is indicated, they will be admitted to Day Surgery at the new state-of-the-art Pediatric OR Suite at BMSCH.Scars resulting from injuries brought on by trauma, burns, or previous surgery can often be improved with a variety of options from laser to flaps and skin grafts. Tissue expansion is an advanced staged treatment for large defects of skin and soft tissues.

  • Pediatric Vascular Malformation

    Vascular malformations such as hemangiomas, hamartomas and red spots of the extremities, trunk, head and neck are evaluated and treated by our experienced pediatric surgeons. Laser treatments and surgery at BMSCH are available to treat these blood vessel abnormalities.

  • Pediatric Hand Surgery

    Congenital and developmental hand abnormalities like extra fingers (polydactyly), webbed fingers (syndactyly) and absent fingers or toes can be treated and reconstructed. Trigger thumb and fingers are released, as well as ring constriction deformities can be treated with flap surgery.

  • Facial Deformities of Childhood

    Cleft lip and nose abnormalities, along with deformities of the external ear will be assessed and reconstructive procedures can be undertaken to rebuild a normal face. Longitudinal growth is evaluated and appropriate staged reconstruction is performed as needed throughout the developmental lifespan. Pediatric facial fractures of the face, orbits and jaws are evaluated and treated surgical to restore as normal an appearance as possible.

  • Pediatric Breast Surgery

    Adolescents with developmental breast deformities like Poland’s Syndrome are evaluated and at the proper age, breast reconstruction can be undertaken. In conjunction, treatment of the opposition normal breast is performed to optimize symmetry between the breasts.
