Jul 24, 2025 Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Awarded Prestigious Disease-Specific Care Certification for Hip Fracture from The Joint Commission

New Brunswick Spine and Hip Fracture 2 East Group

(New Brunswick, NJ) – Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH), a RWJBarnabas Health facility, has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Disease-Specific Care Certification for Hip Fracture from The Joint Commission (TJC) by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. RWJUH is the first RWJBarnabas Health facility to achieve this certification.

The certification recognizes health care organizations that provide clinical programs across the continuum of care for hip fracture treatment. The certification evaluates how organizations use clinical outcomes and performance measures to identify opportunities to improve care, as well as to educate and prepare patients and their caregivers for discharge.

RWJUH underwent a rigorous, onsite review in May. During the visit, a Joint Commission reviewer evaluated compliance with related certification standards including Clinical Information Management, Performance Measurement, Program Management, Supporting Self-Management, as well as Delivering and Facilitating Clinical Care. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

RWJUH and RWJBarnabas Health’s Hip Fracture Surgery Program offers comprehensive care, from surgery through rehabilitation and recovery. Our multidisciplinary team includes orthopedic surgeons, anesthesia, geriatricians, internists, advance practice providers, nurses, physical and occupational therapists and patient care technicians who are specially trained in hip fracture care. The entire team meets quarterly to continue improving and streamlining hip fracture care at RWJUH.

“We are pleased that the Joint Commission has recognized our multidisciplinary Hip Fracture Surgery Team for the expert care that they provide,” said Carlos Sagebien, MD, Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at RWJUH and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS). “Achieving this certification is a tremendous accomplishment as hip fracture treatment requires a standardized, multidisciplinary approach to maximize patient outcomes and minimize patient morbidity. We are extremely proud of the collaboration and teamwork that exists among our Orthopedic, Medical, Trauma, Anesthesia and Nursing teams to provide the most advanced surgical techniques and highest-quality care for our patients who sustain these injuries and allow them to return to active, healthy lives.”

The RWJUH Orthopaedic clinical team started the Hip Fracture Program several years ago, diligently working towards improving the care given to patients with a hip fracture. Their commitment to clinical excellence, patient safety, and continuous improvement was evident throughout the survey process. Through months of preparation, interdisciplinary teamwork, and a shared dedication to delivering the highest quality care, these teams demonstrated what it means to be leaders in orthopedic excellence.
