The Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center offers abdominal, non-cardiac thoracic and head and neck surgeries and expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and management of children’s surgical needs, including:

  • Surgical repair of birth defects, including prenatal consultations.
  • A minimally invasive treatment option for pectus excavatum.
  • Evaluation and management of acute abdominal pain.
  • Serious injuries that require surgery or non-operative management.
  • Diagnosis and surgical care of solid tumors.
  • Endoscopic procedures (bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy and removal of foreign bodies).
  • Video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for children with lung problems.
  • All other surgical procedures for children, including hernia and hydroceles (backup of fluid in a testicle) repairs and orchidopexy (surgical repair of undescended testicle).

The program also provides inpatient and emergency department pediatric surgery consultations, and, in collaboration with The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Monmouth Medical Center, is able to provide various laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures in infants and children, including cholecystectomy (gallbladder surgery), splenectomy (removal of the spleen), anti-reflux surgery for gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and diagnostic procedures.

Inpatient Bedside

Additionally, pediatric urological surgeons at The Children’s Hospital treat abnormal conditions of the urinary tract and kidneys - including conditions of the male reproductive tract and the male and female urinary tracts. They provide complete diagnostic and treatment options for pediatric patients with conditions that affect the urinary tract or kidneys or both using equipment specially designed for children.

Monmouth is one of the few hospitals in New Jersey to offer pediatric patients the benefits of robotic urological surgery. Pediatric otolaryngological (ENT) surgery is led by a physician with fellowship training from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s division of pediatric otolaryngology. Pediatric orthopaedic surgery services include a pediatric scoliosis specialist who works with spine specialists to perform procedures. State-of-the-art instrumentation techniques and real-time spinal cord monitoring ensure optimal outcomes.

The Department of Anesthesiology at Monmouth Medical Center provides state-of-the-art care for children undergoing surgery. Full-time anesthesiologists specially trained in pediatrics together with the surgeon determine what type of anesthesia is best for each child.

Surgery is performed in the main operating room and in The Cranmer Ambulatory Surgery Center, which offers advanced same-day surgical systems that are revolutionizing the treatment of common childhood disorders. The center features a full array of amenities designed for children, such as private pre- and postoperative rooms and a playroom.

Pediatric Pre-Operative Tours

Pediatric Pre-Operative Tours are offered for all pediatric patients having a surgical procedure in the hospital’s Cranmer Ambulatory Surgery Center. Tours are designed to reduce anxiety by giving children a hands-on experience with real medical equipment and visitation to areas they will encounter on the day of surgery. The tours begin in the playroom of the Cranmer Ambulatory Surgery Center and are offered a few times each month. Registration is required in advance by calling 732-923-6525.
