Pediatric Medicine

Inpatient

The Mary Stavola Children's Pavilion is an inpatient unit where children receive treatment for acute and chronic conditions. A pediatric intensive care unit is staffed with the highest level of specialty-trained physicians, nurses and other professionals who provide care for critically ill children. The pavilion's decor offers a whimsical, bold seashore theme.

Monmouth Medical Center's Epilepsy Monitoring Program improves seizure control and quality of life for children and adults suffering from epilepsy and other seizure disorders. Central to the Epilepsy Monitoring Program is state-of-the-art technology that provides continuous video and EEG (electroencephalography) monitoring of electrical activity in the brain. Through the program, pediatric patients are monitored from any pediatric inpatient room via a mobile EEG unit. The goal is to observe any seizures or seizure-like activity in a protected environment, so that a more precise diagnosis can be made.

Outpatient

From advanced surgery to specialized treatment, pediatric subspecialists provide a host of services for children with special needs or chronic illnesses such as thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, neurological and gastrointestinal disorders, asthma and other respiratory problems.

The Pediatric Neurology Program provides inpatient pediatric neurology consultations and offers outpatient services dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders in children, including epilepsy, headaches, head trauma and congenital and metabolic disorders.

The Pediatric Medical Day Stay Unit allows children and adolescents to undergo special procedures that require sedation — as well as other specialized testing and infusion of certain medications — in an environment outside of the hospital room.

The Pediatric Sedation Program at The Unterberg Children's Hospital at Monmouth Medical Centeris led by specially trained doctors and nurses who provide pediatric sedation for children undergoing radiological tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans. Members of the Pediatric Sedation Team take great pride in providing a sedation plan that both provides a safe and effective level of sedation and maximizes success at completion of the proposed diagnostic or imaging procedure.

The Regional Cleft Palate Center, where services and surgery are provided to children born with cleft lip, cleft palate and other oral-facial abnormalities, is the only one in the region and one of five centers in the state established by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. It is made up of a team of specialists who take a personalized approach to the treatment of cleft palate and oral-facial abnormalities.

Pediatric genetics appointments are also available at The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth on a monthly basis through Monmouth Medical Center's Genetic Counseling Program, led by a certified genetics counselor in collaboration with the Department of Clinical Genetics at the UMDNJ Institute of Genomic Medicine.

The Radiology Department holds the Gold Seal accreditation from the American College of Radiology (ACR) for its advanced imaging systems, including a special pediatric accreditation for general magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) called Image Gently. Launched by the ACR, Society for Pediatric Radiology, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, founding members of the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, the Image Gently Campaign was designed to significantly reduce, or “child-size,” the amount of radiation used in imaging exams of children.
