Treating Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, occurs when lymphocytes, which are part of the body’s white blood cells, grow abnormally and create tumors. The two main types of lymphoma are Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The difference between these two types of lymphoma depend in the types of lymphocytes involved. An accurate diagnosis is imperative for effective treatment.
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma causes include viral and bacterial infections. HIV and Epstein-Barr infections are two known risk factors for this type of cancer. Patients experiencing symptoms ranging from fever, swollen lymph nodes, night sweats and unexpected weight loss may or may not be suffering from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis will involve a physical exam and may also involve blood and urine tests, imaging tests (e.g. X-ray, CT, MRI, PET), lymph node biopsy or bone marrow tests.

Our lymphoma specialists will create a customized care plan for each patient based on the type of lymphoma and whether it’s affecting one area or several places in the body.
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survival rates are continuing to increase. According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients generally have a five-year survival rate of more than 70 percent. Early diagnosis and appropriate medical treatment can improve survival rates.
