Along with leading edge medical treatments from competent medical providers, we guarantee an excellent patient experience at every turn.
Safe Care, Together & Always
To guide these efforts, we built a framework to ensure patient care is consistent with our best practices. We regularly educate each team member on how to apply these standards so you and your family receive the highest level of care—even in the smallest details. We maintain stringent systems for appropriate care and medical accuracy, and drive patient safety through the use of proven protocols.
When you come to RWJBarnabas Health, you can trust that:
- Your care is consistent and reliable. We use standardized, evidence-based best practices so you get the safest care every time.
- We learn from every experience. Our teams openly review unexpected events and near misses—not to blame, but to improve and prevent future harm.
- You are part of the safety team. We encourage patients and families to speak up, ask questions, and share concerns. Your voice matters in keeping care safe.
- Safety is everyone’s responsibility. From your doctors and nurses to housekeeping and support staff, every team member is trained and empowered to protect you.
Here are some ways you can participate while in our care:
- Speak up when you don’t understand something or have questions about your care.
- Let us know what medications and supplements you are taking.
- Make sure your care team checks your name and birthday before any procedure or surgery.
- Take important steps to prevent infections, including washing your hands regularly.
- Follow fall prevention strategies that we have in place to keep you safe.
- Tell us if you see or experience any unsafe practices or have any concerns.
As part of our commitment to excellence in quality and patient safety, RWJBarnabas Health facilities participate in the CMS Hospital Compare Report and The Leapfrog Hospital Survey, both offering consumer-oriented websites that offer side-by-side comparisons of hospitals. We are recognized for best practice in healthcare in many credentialing and award programs.

We prioritize infection prevention and control
At RWJBarnabas Health, we know that unclean hands are one of the primary ways pathogens are transmitted throughout the health care environment, so we hold ourselves to the highest standards of hand washing.
- We train all of our team members about the appropriate way to wash hands and times to wash hands
- We do random observations of team members to provide feedback on their hand hygiene practices – we HIGH FIVE when we get it right and we coach when we miss an opportunity
- We share metrics on hand hygiene compliance with our leadership team

We ensure that the correct patients receive the correct medications at the correct time.
Healthcare is fast paced, and requires a lot of human-human interactions. To reduce any risk of making mistakes, at RWJBarnabas Health we utilize technology as one of the steps in ensuring that we give the correct patients the correct medication, at the correct time. This technology is called Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA).
Bar code medication administration (BCMA) systems are electronic scanning systems that intercept medication errors at the point of administration. When administering medications with BCMA, a nurse scans a bar code on the patient’s wristband to confirm that the patient is the right patient. The nurse then scans a bar code on the medicine to verify that it is the right medication at the right dose, given at the right time by the right route.
To make sure we continue to be diligent in utilizing this technology
