About Our Labor And Delivery Unit

As the region's largest obstetrics center, Monmouth Medical Center's labor and delivery unit is capable of handling uncomplicated low-risk births and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for high-risk deliveries. In addition, a three-bed triage room is available for the evaluation of women prior to admission.

The labor, delivery and recovery (LDR) rooms are fully equipped with sophisticated medical and resuscitation equipment, as well as a computerized central fetal monitoring system that enables nurses and physicians to monitor laboring women from any area of the unit.

If there is a complication during childbirth or if a cesarean section is necessary, the surgery is performed in labor and delivery's operating room.

And Monmouth's highly trained neonatal support team is available for any delivery.

When Your Baby Needs Special Care

There are times when newborns need the special care provided in the medical center's Regional Newborn Center, which features a neonatal intensive care nursery that is part of a state-designated Level III regional perinatal center. Babies from throughout central New Jersey are treated here for such problems as prematurity, acute illness or congenital disorders, as well as for conditions requiring emergency surgery.

Making certain that parents understand their child's condition and keeping them updated on care and treatment is a major focus of the center.

Expectant parents whose infants may be at risk to be born with a problem are encouraged to talk with their obstetrician about visiting the center before their child's birth.

Upon Your Arrival

When a woman in labor knows what to expect when she enters the hospital, with suitcase in hand and her labor coach at her side, it can only help to ease her anxieties.

At Monmouth Medical Center, certain steps are taken when you arrive at the labor and delivery unit to determine how labor is progressing and to assess the baby's well-being.

If you have contacted your doctor before coming to the hospital, we will be expecting you.

Upon your arrival to labor and delivery, you'll be escorted to a suite, where every effort is made to accommodate your individual needs and to address your concerns.

When coming to labor and delivery, please note that the main hospital entrance is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and the Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day.

Coaching Comfort

At Monmouth Medical Center, two coaches are allowed in labor and delivery. In addition to the baby's father, this other person can be your mother, sister, aunt or anyone else with whom you'd like to share the childbirth experience - and be part of your support team.

Anesthesia Available Round-the-Clock

Monmouth Medical Center offers 24-hour anesthesia services, so there always is an anesthesiologist on the premises to deliver pain control.

You may request a consultation with an anesthesiologist in advance through your obstetrician. Monmouth also has a counseling program for pregnant women with certain medical conditions who are considering anesthesia. These include women who have had back surgery, are significantly overweight, or who suffer from cardiac, neurological or muscular disorders.
