Technological Advancements

Medical discoveries are made possible through sound expertise as well as ongoing advancements in technology. Together, they have the ability to vastly improve patient outcomes. Our Heart, Vascular and Thoracic medical team offers state-of-the-art options.

The Latest Techniques for Diagnosing and Treating Structural Heart Conditions

  • Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). Angiography technology is the examination of blood or lymph vessels through an X-ray. CCTA uses this technology with an injection of radiocontrast dye and a scanner to identify potential abnormalities or blockages in the coronary arteries.
  • Fractional flow reserve - computed tomography (FFR-CT). This revolutionary and noninvasive procedure is performed using a 3D model of the arteries, which is instrumental in identifying potential heart disease.
  • Patient foramen ovale closure (PFO). This minimally invasive procedure involves the placement of a thin catheter to assist in repairing an opening between the upper two chambers of the heart.
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). This is an innovative, minimally invasive FDA-approved treatment for aortic stenosis or a failing aortic valve. Our full-service heart care facility has expanded to offer this intervention. We are the only facility offering TAVR in Hudson County.

Innovative Cardiothoracic Surgery Options

  • Aneurysm repairs. This procedure involves repairing the weakened or ballooned area in the artery with methods that may include the use of stents or mesh tubes, embolizing the area to stop the bleeding, or clipping off the diseased area.
  • Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). This surgery treats coronary artery disease through grafts, which involve taking a blood vessel from another area and attaching it to the coronary artery above and below the narrowed or blocked area.
  • Valve replacements and repairs. This is an option for patients with damaged or diseased heart valves due to heart disease.

State-of-the-Art Cardiovascular Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment

At Jersey City Medical Center, we offer advanced electrophysiology, which records the electrical activity in the heart and its pathways, isolating and identifying any abnormalities. Your doctor can reproduce your heart rhythms safely and advise you on the best medicines and courses of action to manage your condition.

Our cardiac electrophysiology (EP) lab offers advanced ablations (creating small scars or freezing tissue in tiny amounts to inhibit its movement), implantable cardiofibrillator (ICD) implants, loop recorders and WATCHMAN left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) devices devices.

Other advanced procedures to diagnose heart and vascular issues include:

  • Stress testing. This monitored exercise testing enables medical professionals to measure whether the heart is working too hard when under stress.
  • Cath lab fractional flow reserve technology. A noninvasive 3D model of the arteries is used to identifying potential heart disease.
  • 2D and 3D echocardiography. Echocardiograms use sound waves and echoes to produce an image of the heart and identify problem areas.
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT). This technology captures detailed images of coronary plaque and diseases through the use of infrared light.
