Internal Medicine Residency
at Monmouth Medical Center
Message from the Program Director, Dr. Doantrang Du

Greetings!
Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC). As Program Director, it is my privilege to welcome you to our hospital and share the many opportunities and strengths that make our program an outstanding choice for training.
Monmouth Medical Center has been at the forefront of medical education in Monmouth County since the 1950s. As a three-year categorical program affiliated with Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, we have trained generations of physicians who have gone on to excel in academic medicine, fellowship training, and clinical practice. With residency programs across multiple disciplines—including Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Surgery, Orthopedics, Dentistry, Radiology, Pharmacy, and Pathology—MMC offers a vibrant academic environment and a rich culture of collaboration.
Residency Training Experience
Our mission is to provide patient-centered, evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and equitable training with exposure to a broad spectrum of pathology. Residents develop strong clinical skills through inpatient and ambulatory experiences, complemented by procedural training at our state-of-the-art Simulation Center.
Education extends beyond traditional subspecialties and includes ethics, palliative care, cost-conscious medicine, clinical decision-making, and psychosocial aspects of care. Residents work closely with Rutgers medical students and benefit from individualized mentorship by dedicated faculty. Scholarly activity is highly encouraged and supported, with residents regularly presenting at national meetings and publishing peer-reviewed research.
Culture, Faculty, and Community
At MMC, we foster a welcoming and supportive environment where every resident is valued and encouraged to reach their fullest potential. Our trainees represent a broad range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that enrich our learning community. We strive to make these three years feel like a second home—one built on mutual respect, collegiality, and teamwork.
Our faculty members—many recognized as New Jersey Top Doctors and recipients of numerous Rutgers teaching awards—are deeply committed to education and mentorship. They challenge, inspire, and support residents throughout their professional journey.
The results speak for themselves. Our graduates consistently distinguish themselves through fellowship placement, scholarly achievements, and leadership roles, making our program one of the top Internal Medicine residency programs in New Jersey.
Hospital Excellence and National Recognition
Monmouth Medical Center is nationally recognized for excellence in patient care, safety, education, and innovation. The hospital has earned more Leapfrog “A” grades for safety, quality, and efficiency than any hospital in the region and has been named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group four times—one of the highest distinctions an American hospital can receive.
MMC has been recognized by Newsweek as one of America’s Best-In-State Hospitals and has been included among Newsweek’s Global Best Hospitals for five consecutive years. The hospital is also among just 148 institutions nationwide named to Money’s Best Hospitals in America and was ranked among the nation’s leading major teaching hospitals by Washington Monthly.
Our institution is proud to be the first hospital in New Jersey and only the fifth hospital in the country to achieve Magnet Recognition with Distinction®. In addition, MMC is one of only 96 hospitals nationwide to receive the Emergency Nurses Association’s Lantern Award for excellence in emergency care.
Living and Training in Monmouth County
Monmouth County consistently ranks among the best places to live in New Jersey. With beautiful beaches, parks, vibrant communities, and easy access to New York City and Philadelphia, our location offers residents an exceptional quality of life outside the hospital.
At Monmouth Medical Center, we are proud of our tradition of training compassionate, intellectually curious, and highly skilled internists. We believe that excellent physicians are developed not only through rigorous clinical experiences, but also through mentorship, camaraderie, and a shared commitment to serving our patients and communities.
Thank you for your interest in our program. We invite you to explore the many opportunities that await you at Monmouth Medical Center and look forward to welcoming the next generation of physicians to our family.
Warm regards,
Doantrang Du, MD FACP
